For few of you that are more adventurous, that know a thing about navigation and map reading and who are not afraid of getting lost, here are the races for you. Although you are not obliged to stay on trails (not exactly trail running), you can often finish these races following some trails. The difference is that the course is not marked so you have to choose your own way between checkpoints. Adventure racers will be the most familiar with this discipline, since it was actually taken from adventure races (trekking section). We call these races in Croatia Trekking races, or shorter Trekk, Trek.
The checkpoints that you’ll have to find are usually big details on map (summits, refugees, trail crossroads, waterfalls etc.) but some organizers like to spice up things but adding checkpoints on unnamed peaks, ruins or little details. A little problem could be imprecise hiking maps that are not really perfect so skills from orienteering races could come handy but it can also be stressful (racing on a not so precise map).
There are no organized aid stations (ok, sometimes, there are), but the organizer will provide you info where you can find water. On long races there are checkpoints where your bag can wait you but that’s just for the 100+ km category.
Usually there are three categories on every race: jogging category (approx 10km), hiking/light category (approx. 25km) and ultra category (50-60-100km).
It all started in 2003 with Velebit Trekking, few races emerged every year, so now we have more than 15 races in a calendar all over Croatia, almost on every mountain and on many islands.
We bring you a selection of these in Croatia…
